Navy Lab Installs New DMLS Printer
New at the Additive Manufacturing Laboratory (AML) of the Naval Surface Warfare Center Panama City (FL) Division (NSWC PCD), an EOS M290 direct metal laser sintering machine for timely production of parts and prototypes, enabling the center to rapidly deliver solutions to ensure warfighting dominance, according to Chuck Self, the AML head.

"NSWC PCD's goal is to produce efficient and quality products to the warfighter," he says, "and this printer will allow our engineers and scientists to create strong and complex products in a shorter time frame."

The M290 employs a 400-W fiber laser in a nitrogen atmosphere to produce parts in a 250 by 250 by 325-mm build envelope.

It's a win for buyers because they get custom-made products. And it's a win for sellers because it means no factories, no inventory and bigger profits."
