Printed Inconel Part Delivered by Drone to Offshore Natural-Gas Platform

Tuesday, September 15, 2020

A drone recently flew a 3D-printed metal part for the lifeboat system from an industrial site in Mongstad, Norway, to the Troll A natural-gas platform in the North Sea. The flight was a test, reportedly the world’s first of its kind, where an actual freight operation was conducted over a lengthy distance to an operating offshore installation.

The drone transported a replacement diesel nozzle holder, a critical component used in the platform’s lifeboats and which no longer is manufactured. Therefore, the part was redesigned and modelled in 3D before an advanced metal 3D printer produced a replica from Inconel 718.

Here’s a 2-min. video documenting the event.
