Auburn University, in the state that reportedly has more installed additive manufacturing capacity than any other (Alabama), has established a new Center for Industrialized Additive Manufacturing and selected mechanical engineering professor Tony Overfelt as its inaugural director. And, Overfelt has been awarded a $1.5 million grant from the National Institute of Standards and Technology to study additive manufacturing. The university also has purchased new 3D-printing equipment on par with that used at the Auburn-based GE Aviation plant, one of the pioneers in implementing industrialized additive manufacturing.
