Heat treat
A group of heating/quenching processes developed to alter a part’s or material’s mechanical properties. Heat treating is used in AM to relieve residual stresses and to increase the strength or hardness of a part, by modifying its microstructure.
Hot isostatic pressing (HIPing)
A part is heated up to 2000 C and compressed using isostatic pressure of up to 200 MPa. Argon often is used as the pressure medium. HIPing is used to pressure-sinter metal powder, and remove residual pores in sintered parts.
