closed on November 18 with solid attendee and exhibitor numbers. The four-day show—the world’s largest AM event—boasted 29,581 attendees (65 percent more than 2021) and 802 exhibitors in 550,000-plus sq. ft. of space, significantly ahead of Formnext 2021, which resumed after cancellation of the 2020 live show. These numbers put the event on par with pre-pandemic Formnexts, according to organizer Mesa- go Messe Frankfurt GmbH.
“We are proud of the fact that Form- next has returned to its impressive pre- Covid level,” says Sascha F. Wenzler, vice president-Formnext at Mesago Messe Frankfurt GmbH. “We have once again demonstrated the importance of Formnext as the world’s premiere AM platform and the vital role of face-to-face interaction at Formnext for the further development of this highly innovative sector.”
Details on the technology displayed at Formnext can be found in the Fall 2022 issue of 3D Metal Printing and all throughout 3dmpmag.com.
Fabrisonic Process Wins ASM International Award
Fabrisonic’s patented Ultrasonic Additive Manufacturing (UAM) process has been recognized by ASM Interna- tional with the 2022 Engineering Materi- als Achievement Award. The award rec- ognizes outstanding achievement in materials or materials systems relating to the application of knowledge of materials to an engineering structure or to the design and manufacture of a product.
Fabrisonic’s low-temperature UAM technology relies on solid-state ultrason- ic bonding with no change to metal microstructure. The bond permits joining of dissimilar metals without the metallur- gical mismatch issues seen in other addi- tive processes, according to company officials. UAM allows a range of material combinations to be printed in a single part, reportedly opening the design space to enable property gradients and engineered material.
KAM Adds Two Printers, Houses 20 AM Machines
Bolstering its arsenal of AM machines, Keselowski Advanced Manufacturing (KAM) has installed two large-platform EOS M400-4 metal printers. This brings to 20 the number of AM machines on the KAM shop floor, (pictured above), including five large-format EOS units. They operate alongside 12 multi-axis CNC machine tools that enable KAM to offer integrated-manufacturing capability.
This increase in large-format printers parallels the recent industry demand surge for large metal hypersonic parts, heat exchangers, turbomachinery and monolithic components designed for space, aerospace and defense applica- tions, according to KAM officials.
“One of the biggest challenges to our industry is in building end-user confi- dence in the manufacturing supply chain,” says Brad Keselowski, KAM owner and founder. “The rapid growth in both volume and size of AM parts must be answered with a corresponding increase in machine bandwidth, material availability and finishing capability.”
AMUG 2023 Conference Registration Opens
Online registration is available for the 2023 Additive Manufacturing Users Group (AMUG) Conference, scheduled for March
19-23 in Chicago, IL. This users event is open to owners and operators of industri- al AM technologies used for professional purposes, and will include keynotes, panel discussions, technical sessions and hands- on workshops designed to help users get more from, and do more with, their AM solutions. The conference agenda is expected to offer nearly 150 presenta- tions and workshops.
Users share expertise, best practices, real-world results, challenges and appli- cation developments through dialogue from the stage and conversations during breaks, meals and networking activities. The program encourages participation from early in the morning to late at night, AMUG officials explain, which enables attendees to interact with peers for more than 50 hr. over the five-day event.
