Callanan New AM Director at Renishaw
Renishaw has appointed 25-yr. com- pany veteran Louise Callanan as its new director of AM. She will work closely with Sir David McMurtry, Renishaw’s founder and executive chairman, and bring her extensive operational experience and business understanding to the compa- ny’s Additive Manufacturing Group to help Renishaw continue its growth within this rapidly developing sector, according to Renishaw officials.
UCF Earns U Lift Challenge Award to Pursue Metal-AM
Materials Development
Lift, the Detroit, MI-based national manufacturing innovation institute, announced that it has awarded a U Lift Challenge project award to the Universi- ty of Central Florida (UCF) to further explore metallic alloys used in AM. The UCF team will assess and establish thermokinetic criteria to determine print- ability and buildability of metallic alloys for powder-bed fusion (PBF) AM in order
to accelerate the discovery of new AM- specific alloys as well as component- ready manufacturing of commercial alloys.
Lift’s U Lift Challenge, modeled after the television show Shark Tank, is open to all U.S. universities. A select number of proposals, initially reviewed by the Lift Technology Team, are chosen to be pre- sented in a Shark Tank-style virtual meet- ing that includes Lift staff and industry members from the Lift Technology Inter- est Group. UCF’s proposal proved suc- cessful in the competition.
While PBF, the UCF team offered in its proposal, allows for customized manufacturing of components with nearly unlimited geometry and design freedom, the current approach links parameters directly to microstructure, without due consideration for thermo- physical properties of alloy/composi- tion, leading to limited design capabili- ty that is only valid within the experimental data available. The ability to design and develop new or modify existing commercial alloys will allow for rapid design and assessment of metal- lic alloys for customized manufacturing and advantageous applications in hypersonics, lightweight armor, weapon systems, space, legacy parts and air- frame structures.
New Podcast: Laser
Focused from Velo3D
Velo3D has launched the Laser Focused podcast, where Renette Youssef interacts with thought leaders and inno- vators in various industries and roles
related to 3D printing and mechanical engi- neering, including avia- tion, space, automotive and manufacturing.
Guests on season one of Laser Focused include Max Haot, founder and CEO of Launcher; Tess Hatch, partner at Bessemer Venture Partners; and Stefan Krause, an entre-
preneur in the automotive industry and a former executive at BMW and Canoo.

Fabrisonic’s NASA JPL
Support Recognized in
NASA Tech. Publication
Successful technology and capability developments in support of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) have earned Fabrisonic coverage in the latest of NASA’s Spinoff 2022 publications.
The article, “Pounding Metal Parts into Profit: A novel additive manufactur- ing technique combines metals and embeds sensors,” details how Fabrison- ic’s ultrasonic additive manufacturing (UAM) process could be used to create a lighter-weight, higher-performing heat exchanger.
“The federal government’s Small Business Innovation Research SBIR pro- gram is a godsend to small businesses as it allows us non-dilutive funding to per- fect our craft,” comments Mark Norfolk, CEO of Fabrisonic.
The SBIR program has allowed Fab- risonic to hone its UAM process into a viable technology that can pay large div- idends in aerospace applications.
Free 3D Systems eBook Details Benefits of Part Consolidation via Metal AM
3D Systems offers a free download of its ebook, Lower Cost, Boost Effi- ciency: Reducing Part Count with Addi- tive Manufacturing, which promises help in cost-effectively creating com- plex designs using 3D metal printing and enabling parts makers the ability to rethink their design and manufacturing processes. The ebook, with manufactur- ing executives, managers, engineers and designers in mind, features real- world examples that detail the benefits of part consolidation courtesy of metal AM.
