Mazak and Oak Ridge Partner to Further Wire Additive R&D
Mazak Corp., a Florence, KY-based provider of machining solutions, and Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s (ORNL’s) manufacturing demonstration center in Oak Ridge, TN, have announced a cooperative research and development agreement. Working on behalf of the U.S. Department of Energy, ORNL and Mazak will advance the use of hot wire deposition (HWD) in additive manufacturing (AM).
Using hybrid multitasking HWD technology, the project looks to develop a closed- loop control system with the ability to make on-the-fly adjustments according to sen- sor feedback during the HWD builds. Such in-process adjustability ensures the consis- tency, quality and reliability of HWD additive technology, especially for aerospace, automotive and die/mold industries.
Specific applications include the repair of turbine blades and other high-wear parts such as engine blocks, cylinder heads, and molds and dies.
beyond technical design for AM training, helps companies achieve transformation goals, such as creating innovation engines, accelerating go-to-market and improving manufacturing efficiency.
In a recent Blueprint study, 85 percent of companies ranked knowledge as their biggest barrier to driving greater adop- tion of AM across their organizations. “Whether an organization is early in additive adoption or mature, it is our aim to provide the knowledge and the lan- guage to achieve these transformational benefits,” says Kunal Mehta, head of consulting at Blueprint.
The Think Additively program includes onsite courses, individualized coaching and additive accelerator workshops.
Gefertec to Build in Virginia
Berlin, Germany-based Gefertech, LLC, a Berlin, Germany-based provider of metal 3D printing systems based on modern arc welding and wire,
announced that it will open its first U.S. manufacturing facility in Danville, VA. Expected to create eight new jobs, the project includes $1.9 million in capital investment. Gefertec’s arc machines pro- vide manufacturing solutions for metal- working companies and opportunities for research and development institutions.
H.C. Starck Solutions Expands 3D Printing Capabilities
H.C. Starck Solutions, a Coldwater, MI-based maker of metal powders, com- plex metal parts and AM parts made from refractory metals, including tung- sten, tantalum, niobium and molybde- num, has added a Renishaw powder-bed fusion printing system to its AM capabili- ties. The Renishaw equipment will be used to produce complex metal parts the aerospace, defense, medical, and industrial markets.
 Sandvik Acquires Stake in BeamIt
Sandvik Machining Solutions, a Swe- den-based provider of tools and tooling systems for metal cutting, has acquired a 30-percent stake in privately owned BeamIt, an Italian provider of metal AM services and end-use components for automotive, energy and aerospace.
View Now: Streamlining Manufacturing
for Medical Implants
nTopology, a New York, NY-based developer of advanced manufacturing solutions via its nTop Platform software, has available for viewing on its website a new webinar: Streamlining Manufactur- ing for Medical Implants, featuring Ren- ishaw plc and Irish Manufacturing Research (IMR). The webinar covers:
• How nTopology's solutions allow organizations to design and optimize parts that are ready for AM;
• The repeatability of Renishaw metal printers being used for manufacturing accurate implantable parts; and
• How IMR exploits the design free- doms of additive manufacturing to cre- ate new and novel devices in regulated industries.
EOAT Provider OnRobot Opens R&D Office in CA
OnRobot, provider of end-of-arm tooling (EOAT) for collaborative-robot applications, has opened its first loca- tion specifically dedicated R&D in the United States. The Los Angeles (Culver City), CA, office comprises 6000 sq. ft. and houses engineers, researchers and local staff tasked with developing new products.
Last year marked OnRobot’s first foray into the Los Angeles area, as it acquired Perception Robotics and its Gecko Grip- per technology, and developed it for commercial launch.
The collaborative-robot market now is the fastest growing segment of industrial automation, expected to jump ten-fold to 34 percent of all industrial robot sales by 2025, according to the International Federation of Robotics.
