DOE Laboratory
to Use Senvol’s AM Data-Collection Procedures
AM database operator Senvol, LLC, New York, NY, and the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) have signed a two-year research agreement focused on pedigreed AM data gen- eration, according to Senvol and DOE officials.
Senvol and ORNL will use Senvol’s Standard Operating Procedure document, which covers the collection of appropriate geometric infor- mation, key processing parameters and material-test- ing protocols.
The partners will evaluate this information in order to determine and define best practices and ensure that all required data is captured and accurately extracted dur- ing AM data-generation projects.
Sintavia and Trumpf Announce TruPrint Agreement
AM services provider Sintavia, LLC, Davie FL, and machine- tool and laser services provider Trumpf, Inc., Farmington, CT, announced an agreement to work together to accelerate the penetration of Trumpf TruPrint metal printers into the global aerospace industry. The agreement includes the early-2018 installation of a Trumpf TruPrint 3000 with industrial-part and powder management in Sintavia’s Davie manufacturing facility, and marks the start of a new strategic alignment for both com- panies, according to Sintavia officials.
Also, Sintavia announced the addition of two new employ- ees to its senior-leadership team: Rick Clark as vice president of operations and J. Louis Schlegel IV as global vice president of sales. Mercedes-Benz Uses 3D Printing for Old Truck Parts
Mercedes-Benz Trucks 3D-printed a metal thermostat cover for old Mercedes/Unimog truck models, marking the company’s first use of AM technology for part replacement. Made of alu- minum and silicon, the part passed all of Mercedes’ quality-assurance tests.
Mercedes is owned by Daimler AG, Stuttgart, Germany, which owns truck brands in Europe and North America. The company envisions using AM to print parts for older, classic and limited- edition vehicles, which would allow for the manufacture of parts on command, scaling back of inventory storage and decentralization of warehousing.
GE Additive Certifying AM-Production Centers
GE Additive announced that it is selecting compa- nies to become certified AM production centers for its customers. GE already has signed a memorandum of understanding with Oerlikon to become a preferred, non- exclusive component manu- facturer, and is working to certify several companies by year-end.
Each certified production partner will operate additive machines from GE providers Concept Laser and Arcam, using additive material from AP&C and best practices developed at service provider DTI. They will receive guidance from GE’s additive design and manufac- turing staff.
AP&C Receives ISO 13485 Certification
AM supplier Arcam AB announced that the compa- ny’s powder-manufacturing subsidiary, AP&C, Quebec, Canada, has received ISO 13485 certification.
ISO 13485 specifies requirements for quality- management systems in the medical-device industry and related services, including orthopedic implants.
The company adds this certification to its existing ISO 9001 and AS9100 certifications.
ITAMCO Adds EOS 3D Printer for Medical Devices
Indiana Technology and Manufacturing Companies (Itamco), Plymouth, IN, has added a new EOS M 290 AM printer to its lineup, allowing the company to begin producing components for the medical-device industry.
