Mercedes-Benz Uses 3D Printing for Old Truck Parts
November 3, 2017Mercedes-Benz Trucks 3D-printed a metal thermostat cover for old Mercedes/Unimog truck models, marking the company’s first use of AM technology for part replacement. Made of aluminum and silicon, the part passed all of Mercedes’ quality-assurance tests.
Mercedes is owned by Daimler AG, Stuttgart, Germany, which owns truck brands in Europe and North America. The company envisions using AM to print parts for older, classic and limited-edition vehicles, which would allow for the manufacture of parts on command, scaling back of inventory storage and decentralization of warehousing.
